              A
question often asked is whether softened water will deprive
people of the essential minerals they need for a healthy diet.
The vast majority of these minerals comes from the food we eat
and neither softened or hard drinking water provides significant
amounts of the daily requirements. A glass of hard water supplies
only one tenth of the calcium that the same amount of milk would.
The average daily intake of sodium in adults is 3500mg, although
the Department of Health recommend a level of 2300mg. In comparison
two glasses of milk contain 350mg of sodium and two slices of
bread contain 375mg, while an adult drinking softened water
would have to drink approximately 4 pints of water to add 310mg
                  to their daily intake. |
